Area Information Madagascar is the second largest island nation in the world! Today it has developed into a very special and unique paradise for experienced sailors. There are still some uninhabited islands, where a few people still live in bamboo huts without water and electricity. And there are islands with hotels (for example, Nosy Be, Nosy Iranja), where there are many restaurants and shops. The time difference is UTC + 3 h.
Language, currency, food English is spoken in most areas. The currency is the Malagasy Ariary (2500 MAG = about 1 euro), but the euro is accepted almost everywhere. When at anchor,e.g. in the marina there is an exchange trade going on . Fishing lines, bait, hooks and T-shirts are the best method of payment.Credit cards can not be used as a rule, and used only for the deposit of the security deposit.
Mobile phone reception is possible only on Nosy Bé.
Wind and Weather Year around temperatures above 25 ° C.There are only about 30 – 40 days of rain, evenly spread throughout the year.
From April to June there is often a light breeze from the Northeast and in the afternoon from Southwest – up to 15 knots. From July to October usually with a wind blowing from the East up to 25 knots. August and September you can expect storms. Cyclone season is from December to March. The best time is from July to October.
Navigation and Tide Here, sailing skills are needed! The existing charts are mostly extremely outdated, and GPS and plotters can not always be relied upon. Navigation is basically only possible under visual condition and with a depth finder. There are no sea signs except a few imprecise beacons. The tidal range is extreme (up to about 4 m)!
In any case, you should be at anchor before dusk, because the nights are very dark in Madagascar and one therefore can not recognize really anything.
Licence conditions Licenses are not required. Our partners expect, however experience in handling ocean-going yachts. Additionally, a Sailing Resume has to be filled, which gives information about your current charter trips.
Arrival If you arrive by plane, we can organize the transfer to your departure base. Prices upon request.
