Area information The Caribbean offers a lot of great areas to sail. It is divided into Antilles, the Bahamas, the Mexican Caribbean islands and other countries located on the south and centeral American mainland. The Antilles are various sizes,i.e. Cuba,Hispanola (Dom.Republic and Haiti), Jamaica and Puerto Rico, along with the other smaller Antilles. The smaller Antilles offer the main sailing areas of the Caribbean and amoung those are the Windward Islands, also known as Granada Islands being the most popularof the Caribbean islands. They reach from Martinique over St. Lucia, Bequia, St. Vincent, Union Islands to Grenada.Especially interesting is the large Horse shore Reef of the Tobago Cays. The Leeward Islands reach in the North from Guadeloupe to the British Virgin Islands. They include Antigua and St. Martin. There is a sub-tropic climate int the Caribbean and this means year around high temperatures of 27°/ 28° C. These temperatures do not vary much through out the year and the average water temperature is 25°C. The humidity remain high the whole year. the trade winds blows from north-east to east and this makes for a plesent summer climate. The main sailing season is December to May.From the middle of June until around the middle of November is the danger of tropical tornados/ depressions – hurricanes. The majority of these storms happen in September. Therfore making June a more attractive month for visiting the Caribbean and most yachts are not cruising then. The prices are lower and the prices of flights a lower too as compared to the winter months The Little Antilles are ideal areas for catamarans of any size. An East-North-East Trade Wind blows, meaning that you sail a North/East direction with reduced wind forces. This is the perfect wind for catamarans.
